Passenger-car registrations in Luxembourg

Luxembourg registered 5 073 passenger cars in January 2024: 3 643 new cars (71.8% of the total) and 1 430 used imports. That is up 7.6% on December 2023 and down 2.7% on January 2023. Year to date, meaning January alone, the total is 5 073, down 2.7% on January last year. Private buyers accounted for 37.4% of the new cars; the rest were registered to companies, leasing firms and fleets.

BMW led the brand ranking with 647 registrations and a 12.8% share, ahead of VOLKSWAGEN (629) and AUDI (477). Together the top three brands took 34.6% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, HYUNDAI grew fastest year on year (+94.5%) while PEUGEOT fell furthest (−28.9%). The best-selling model was the VOLKSWAGEN GOLF with 169 registrations, followed by the BMW X1 (123) and the AUDI A3 (107). The GOLF arrived mainly as a used import: 95 used against 74 new.

Battery-electric cars took 15.6% of all registrations. Among new cars alone the electric share was 21.4%. Plug-in hybrids took 8.9%, other hybrids 19.4%, diesel 23.0% and petrol 32.7%. The leading electric brand was TESLA with 124 battery-electric registrations, ahead of MG (106). The best-selling battery-electric model was the MG MG4 with 99 registrations, ahead of the TESLA MODEL Y (63). New cars averaged 109.4 g/km of CO₂ (WLTP). Used imports were on average 7.4 years old when they were registered.

January 2024 was the 3rd-highest of the 5 months on this page, which average 5 195 registrations a month; the peak was October 2023 with 5 758 and the low December 2023 with 4 715.
