Sweden registered 22 584 new passenger cars in August 2026. That is up 20.9% on July 2026 and up 12.0% on August 2025. Year to date the market stands at 183 119 registrations, up 2.4% on the same period of last year. Private buyers accounted for 43.6% of registrations, the rest going to companies, leasing and fleets.

VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 3 376 registrations and a 15.0% share, ahead of VOLVO (2 792) and TOYOTA (2 452). Together the top three brands took 38.2% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, VOLKSWAGEN grew fastest year on year (+29.2%) while SKODA fell furthest (โˆ’6.8%). The best-selling model was the VOLVO XC60 with 886 registrations, followed by the VOLVO EX/XC40 (801) and the VOLKSWAGEN ID.7/ID.7 TOURER (621).

Battery-electric cars took 44.6% of new registrations, compared with 33.6% in August 2025. Plug-in hybrids took 22.1%, other hybrids 9.0%, diesel 5.2% and petrol 18.9%. The leading electric brand was VOLVO with 1 621 battery-electric registrations, ahead of KIA (1 542). The best-selling battery-electric model was the VOLVO EX/XC40 with 755 registrations, ahead of the VOLKSWAGEN ID.7/ID.7 TOURER (621).

August 2026 was the 23rd-highest of the 36 months on this page, which average 23 158 registrations a month; the peak was June 2026 with 29 759 and the low January 2026 with 16 041.
