Ireland registered 19 008 passenger cars in August 2026: 10 924 new cars (57.5% of the total) and 8 084 used imports. That is down 34.1% on July 2026 and up 23.4% on August 2025. Year to date the market stands at 174 577 registrations, up 13.9% on the same period of last year.

VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 2 970 registrations and a 15.6% share, ahead of TOYOTA (2 887) and BMW (1 351). Together the top three brands took 37.9% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, TOYOTA grew fastest year on year (+79.8%). The best-selling model was the TOYOTA RAV4 with 612 registrations, followed by the KIA SPORTAGE (322) and the SKODA OCTAVIA (306).

Battery-electric cars took 24.6% of all registrations, compared with 18.0% in August 2025. Among new cars alone the electric share was 34.4%. Plug-in hybrids took 16.1%, other hybrids 19.5%, diesel 14.3% and petrol 25.4%. The leading electric brand was KIA with 519 battery-electric registrations, ahead of VOLKSWAGEN (359). The best-selling battery-electric model was the VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 with 274 registrations, ahead of the KIA EV2 (149).

August 2026 was the 13th-highest of the 36 months on this page, which average 16 037 registrations a month; the peak was January 2026 with 31 259 and the low December 2024 with 4 750.
