Passenger-car registrations in Luxembourg

Luxembourg registered 5 375 passenger cars in January 2025: 3 734 new cars (69.5% of the total) and 1 641 used imports. That is up 20.2% on December 2024 and up 6.0% on January 2024. Year to date, meaning January alone, the total is 5 375, up 6.0% on January last year. Private buyers accounted for 42.6% of the new cars; the rest were registered to companies, leasing firms and fleets.

BMW led the brand ranking with 713 registrations and a 13.3% share, ahead of VOLKSWAGEN (611) and MERCEDES-BENZ (608). Together the top three brands took 36.0% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, OPEL grew fastest year on year (+61.5%) while AUDI fell furthest (−7.8%). The best-selling model was the VOLKSWAGEN GOLF with 194 registrations, followed by the BMW X1 (151) and the BMW 1 SERIES (150). The GOLF arrived mainly as a used import: 118 used against 76 new.

Battery-electric cars took 22.2% of all registrations, compared with 15.6% in January 2024. Among new cars alone the electric share was 31.3%. Plug-in hybrids took 7.1%, other hybrids 22.2%, diesel 18.4% and petrol 30.1%. The leading electric brand was MERCEDES-BENZ with 139 battery-electric registrations, ahead of BMW (130). The best-selling battery-electric model was the MERCEDES-BENZ EQA with 83 registrations, ahead of the SMART FORTWO (57). New cars averaged 95.4 g/km of CO₂ (WLTP). Used imports were on average 7.4 years old when they were registered.

January 2025 was the 9th-highest of the 17 months on this page, which average 5 375 registrations a month; the peak was March 2024 with 6 279 and the low August 2024 with 4 177.
