Sources

The figures on these pages come from Statistik Austria, the national statistics office, which publishes passenger-car registrations by make as open government data (CC BY 4.0) at data.statistik.gv.at: Kfz-Neuzulassungen (new registrations, table OGD_fkfzul0759_OD_PkwNZL_1, monthly since 2000) and Kfz-Gebrauchtzulassungen (used-car registrations, table OGD_f0760ext_OD_PkwGZL_1). Both are flow tables: one row per month and make, replaced whole with every release. The new-car table is refreshed around the 9th of the following month, the used-car table around the 14th.

Alongside the tables, Statistik Austria publishes a monthly press workbook for each flow (Kfz-Neuzulassungen, Kfz-Gebrauchtzulassungen) with a sheet per month: passenger cars by fuel or energy source (with the plug-in hybrids as a sub-row of the hybrids), the top 20 new-car types, the top 10 electric makes and types, and passenger cars by make. The fuel mix and every model figure on this site are those tables; the by-make table is the check on the OGD table for every month.

Files read: 2026-09-13. Latest month: 2026-07, the newest month present in all four sources (the used-car table and workbook run a few days behind the new-car ones). The site shows the latest 36 months. There is no register snapshot behind any figure and no survivorship correction: a month is what Statistik Austria publishes for it, and the whole history is re-read on every refresh.

What is counted

• Passenger cars are Statistik Austria's "Pkw" (EU category M1), the same population in the tables and the workbooks.
• New is a Neuzulassung: a new car's first registration in Austria. Used is a Gebrauchtzulassung: the registration of a car registered before, in Austria (a change of owner) or abroad (an import); Statistik Austria does not separate the two and publishes neither the origin nor the age of the car.
• Motorhomes (Wohnmobile) are a vehicle class of their own in Statistik Austria's tables and are not part of the Pkw figures, so no camper builder appears among the brands.
• Brands are the makes of the OGD tables, spelt the way the site spells them everywhere (VW → Volkswagen, Mercedes → Mercedes-Benz, Ssang-Yong and KGM → SsangYong); Statistik Austria's "Andere Marken" is the OTHER row.
• Models. Statistik Austria publishes registrations by make, not by model. The model figures here are its own monthly top-20 list of new-car types and top-10 lists of electric makes and types; there is no full model table for Austria. The top-20 list covers new cars and is closed with an "other models" row so that it sums to the month's new cars; the electric lists are closed the same way to the month's new battery-electric cars. A brand's page shows its types in the top-20 list of the latest month; a brand with none has no model rows. Types are shown as Statistik Austria prints them, except that its occasional typos ("BWM X3", "TESAL MODEL Y", "PEUEOT 208") are corrected and a type it has spelt two ways over the months ("MERCEDES GLC KLASSE" and "MERCEDES GLC") gets its newer spelling.

Fuel groups

From the workbook's fuel table: petrol (Benzin, including flex-fuel), diesel, hybrid (Benzin/Elektro and Diesel/Elektro hybrids without a plug), plug-in hybrid (the "darunter Plug-in" sub-rows, taken out of the hybrids), battery electric (Elektro), gas (Erdgas, Flüssiggas and their bivalent petrol combinations) and other (Wasserstoff and the rest). The BEV and PHEV shares on the monthly page count new and used cars together; the new-car BEV share counts new cars only. The groups partition the month exactly: the fuel table's total equals the OGD total in every month, which is checked at ingest.

Registrations

Passenger cars (Pkw, EU category M1) registered in Austria in the month, new and used together, from Statistik Austria's open government data tables of registrations by make.

New cars / New share

Neuzulassungen: a new car's first registration in Austria. New share = new cars ÷ all registrations.

Used cars / Used share

Gebrauchtzulassungen: the registration of a car registered before, in Austria (a change of owner) or abroad (an import); Statistik Austria does not separate the two. Used share = used ÷ all registrations.

BEV share

Battery-electric cars (Elektro) as a share of all registrations, new and used together, from the press workbook's fuel table. Plug-in hybrids are the 'darunter Plug-in' sub-rows, taken out of the hybrids.

New-car BEV share

Battery-electric cars as a share of new registrations only.

Year to date

Registrations, new and used, from January to this month, and the change versus the same months a year earlier.

MoM / YoY / YTD

Change versus the previous month, versus the same month a year earlier, and the calendar-year-to-date total (with its change versus the same period a year earlier).

Checks

At ingest, every month present in the OGD table and the press workbook is gated, new and used separately: the fuel table's total must equal the OGD total, and the workbook's by-make table must equal the OGD table make for make (the workbook's own spellings, such as "Alfa-Romeo" or "Madza", are mapped first). A month with fewer than 10,000 new or 40,000 used registrations is rejected as a truncated download. A month whose OGD total moved by more than half a percent since the previous run is reported; more than ten percent fails the run. An acceptance gate reviews the top 40 brands for coverage and for sibling spellings that should be one brand. A sanity gate rejects an export whose latest month is less than half the previous month, whose month series has a gap, or where any mart is empty. An identity gate compares the exported new, used and total counts of every published month against the raw tables, and the fuel groups against the total. Finally, a consistency audit re-derives shares, sums, MoM, YoY and rankings from the exported JSON, checks that every top list closes on its total through its "other" row, and fails on any mismatch.

Caveats

• Counts are Statistik Austria's monthly passenger-car (Pkw) registrations by make from its open government data tables, new and used, re-read whole on every refresh; the press workbook's by-make table equals the table in every month, and its fuel table gives the fuel mix.
• Percentages are shown only when the comparison month has at least 30 registrations.
• A brand's BEV column holds its row in the month's top-10 electric list only; brands outside the list show no figure, not zero.
• Brands with fewer than 50 registrations over the 36 months have no brand page and appear as plain text in the tables.
• Registration is not sale: dealer demo stock and leasing fleets register too.
