Methodology

Sources

The figures on these pages come from auto-schweiz, the Swiss importers' association, whose monthly statistics are drawn from the federal roads office's vehicle register (ASTRA / MOFIS) and published at auto.swiss on the first working days after each month, for Switzerland and Liechtenstein together. Three workbooks are read: registrations of new passenger cars by make with a fuel block (monthly columns), by make and model (a cumulative year-to-date table with one sheet per month), and plug-in and electric cars by model with a fuel code (battery electric, plug-in hybrid, range extender, fuel cell).

Every month is checked against the Federal Statistical Office (BFS): its monthly series of first registrations of new passenger cars by fuel (dataset DF_IVS_0_GENERAL_M on stats.swiss, source ASTRA IVZ, the register's state on the 3rd of the following month, Switzerland only) agrees with the auto-schweiz total within about 1 % in most months; the pipeline requires 3 %, or 3 % over two months when a month-end cutoff moves cars between neighbouring months, and each fuel group within 2.5 % of the month.

Files read: 2026-09-13. Latest month: 2026-08, the newest month present in all three workbooks and the BFS series. The site shows the latest 36 months. The whole history is re-read on every refresh (the current year's workbooks are replaced in place), so a month can move slightly after it was first published; moves are listed in the refresh.

What is counted

Fuel groups

From the make workbook's fuel block: petrol (Benzin), diesel, hybrid (Hybrid HEV + MHEV: full and mild hybrids without a plug), plug-in hybrid (Plug-In PHEV + REX), battery electric (Elektrisch/BEV), gas (CNG) and other (Wasserstoff/Elektrisch, Diverse). The groups are closed on the month's total (the block misses it by a car or two in some months). All shares are of new registrations.

KPI definitions

Registrations
New passenger cars (Personenwagen) put into circulation in Switzerland and Liechtenstein in the month, from auto-schweiz's monthly statistics (source: the federal roads office's register, ASTRA / MOFIS), checked against the Federal Statistical Office's series. New cars only.
Year to date
New registrations from January to this month, and the change versus the same months a year earlier.
BEV share
Battery-electric cars as a share of new registrations, from the make workbook's fuel block; plug-in hybrids (incl. range extenders) are shown separately.
Hybrid share
Hybrids without a plug (full and mild hybrids, auto-schweiz's 'Hybrid HEV + MHEV') as a share of new registrations.
Diesel share
Diesel cars as a share of new registrations.
MoM / YoY / YTD
Change versus the previous month, versus the same month a year earlier, and the calendar-year-to-date total (with its change versus the same period a year earlier).

Checks

At ingest, per month: the model differences net of relabelled rows must equal the make workbook's total within three cars, whose make rows must sum to it exactly; every make the make workbook lists must match the sum of its models within ten cars or one percent; the plug-in workbook's electric and plug-in totals must not exceed the fuel block's and must not fall more than 10 % below them; the auto-schweiz total must be within 3 % of the BFS series (or over two months), and each fuel group within 2.5 % of the month. A month with fewer than 8,000 registrations is rejected as a truncated workbook. A month whose total moved by more than half a percent since the previous run is reported; more than ten percent fails the run. An acceptance gate reviews the top 40 brands for coverage and for sibling spellings that should be one brand. A sanity gate rejects an export whose latest month is less than half the previous month, whose month series has a gap, or where any mart is empty. An identity gate compares the exported totals of every published month against the raw tables, and the fuel groups against the total. Finally, a consistency audit re-derives shares, sums, MoM, YoY and rankings from the exported JSON and fails on any mismatch.

Data files

Every page is generated from JSON under /data/ch/: meta.json (with new_only: true), months.json, YYYY-MM.json (with kpis, models[], makes[], fuel[], bev_models[], bev_makes[], relabelled[]), makes.json, makes/<slug>.json.
