Austria registered 73 057 passenger cars in December 2023: 18 497 new cars (25.3% of the total) and 54 560 used cars. That is down 10.0% on November 2023 and up 1.3% on December 2022. Year to date the market stands at 997 131 registrations, up 3.2% on the same period of last year.
VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 13 669 registrations and a 18.7% share, ahead of BMW (6 758) and AUDI (6 115). Together the top three brands took 36.3% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, HYUNDAI grew fastest year on year (+45.2%) while FORD fell furthest (−7.3%). The best-selling new-car model was the HYUNDAI TUCSON with 531 new registrations, followed by the VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (519) and the HYUNDAI I 20 (513).
Battery-electric cars took 8.0% of all registrations. Among new cars alone the electric share was 21.7%. Plug-in hybrids took 3.0%, other hybrids 9.2%, diesel 45.9% and petrol 33.9%. The leading electric brand was HYUNDAI with 715 battery-electric registrations, ahead of BMW (673). The best-selling battery-electric model was the HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 with 422 registrations, ahead of the TESLA MODEL Y (413).
December 2023 was the weakest of the 5 months on this page, which average 81 118 registrations a month; the strongest was October 2023 with 85 131.
