Austria registered 80 760 passenger cars in January 2024: 17 552 new cars (21.7% of the total) and 63 208 used cars. That is up 10.5% on December 2023 and up 6.3% on January 2023. Year to date, meaning January alone, the total is 80 760, up 6.3% on January last year.
VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 14 974 registrations and a 18.5% share, ahead of AUDI (7 440) and BMW (7 404). Together the top three brands took 36.9% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, BMW grew fastest year on year (+15.5%) while SEAT fell furthest (−7.6%). The best-selling new-car model was the VOLKSWAGEN GOLF with 662 new registrations, followed by the SKODA OCTAVIA (627) and the SEAT IBIZA (428).
Battery-electric cars took 5.9% of all registrations. Among new cars alone the electric share was 16.1%. Plug-in hybrids took 3.3%, other hybrids 9.3%, diesel 46.4% and petrol 35.0%. The leading electric brand was BMW with 489 battery-electric registrations, ahead of TESLA (391). The best-selling battery-electric model was the TESLA MODEL Y with 304 registrations, ahead of the BMW I4 (214).
January 2024 was the 5th-highest of the 6 months on this page, which average 81 059 registrations a month; the peak was October 2023 with 85 131 and the low December 2023 with 73 057.
