Austria registered 89 369 passenger cars in May 2024: 19 820 new cars (22.2% of the total) and 69 549 used cars. That is down 5.8% on April 2024 and up 2.8% on May 2023. Year to date the market stands at 448 822 registrations, up 8.4% on the same period of last year.
VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 17 322 registrations and a 19.4% share, ahead of BMW (8 130) and AUDI (8 030). Together the top three brands took 37.5% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, VOLKSWAGEN grew fastest year on year (+8.3%) while RENAULT fell furthest (−12.8%). The best-selling new-car model was the VOLKSWAGEN GOLF with 1 421 new registrations, followed by the VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN (442) and the SKODA OCTAVIA (441).
Battery-electric cars took 6.4% of all registrations. Among new cars alone the electric share was 17.4%. Plug-in hybrids took 3.0%, other hybrids 9.7%, diesel 44.0% and petrol 36.8%. The leading electric brand was BMW with 642 battery-electric registrations, ahead of TESLA (499). The best-selling battery-electric model was the TESLA MODEL Y with 308 registrations, ahead of the BMW I4 (256).
May 2024 was the 3rd-highest of the 10 months on this page, which average 85 441 registrations a month; the peak was March 2024 with 98 014 and the low December 2023 with 73 057.
