Austria registered 82 273 passenger cars in August 2024: 17 115 new cars (20.8% of the total) and 65 158 used cars. That is down 14.0% on July 2024 and up 0.1% on August 2023. Year to date the market stands at 724 044 registrations, up 7.5% on the same period of last year.
VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 15 499 registrations and a 18.8% share, ahead of BMW (7 186) and AUDI (6 904). Together the top three brands took 36.0% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, PEUGEOT grew fastest year on year (+13.1%) while FORD fell furthest (−5.4%). The best-selling new-car model was the VOLKSWAGEN POLO with 593 new registrations, followed by the BMW X1 (450) and the DACIA SANDERO (426).
Battery-electric cars took 6.7% of all registrations, compared with 6.8% in August 2023. Among new cars alone the electric share was 18.1%. Plug-in hybrids took 3.2%, other hybrids 11.0%, diesel 41.6% and petrol 37.5%. The leading electric brand was BMW with 598 battery-electric registrations, ahead of TESLA (398). The best-selling battery-electric model was the TESLA MODEL Y with 360 registrations, ahead of the BYD SEAL (290).
August 2024 was the 9th-highest of the 13 months on this page, which average 86 895 registrations a month; the peak was March 2024 with 98 014 and the low December 2023 with 73 057.
