Austria registered 87 693 passenger cars in September 2024: 19 894 new cars (22.7% of the total) and 67 799 used cars. That is up 6.6% on August 2024 and up 4.3% on September 2023. Year to date the market stands at 811 737 registrations, up 7.1% on the same period of last year.
VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 16 219 registrations and a 18.5% share, ahead of AUDI (7 625) and BMW (7 461). Together the top three brands took 35.7% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, SKODA grew fastest year on year (+14.1%) while MERCEDES-BENZ fell furthest (−3.7%). The best-selling new-car model was the TESLA MODEL Y with 655 new registrations, followed by the SKODA OCTAVIA (629) and the SKODA FABIA (446).
Battery-electric cars took 7.9% of all registrations, compared with 7.3% in September 2023. Among new cars alone the electric share was 22.2%. Plug-in hybrids took 3.2%, other hybrids 10.7%, diesel 42.0% and petrol 36.1%. The leading electric brand was TESLA with 961 battery-electric registrations, ahead of BMW (698). The best-selling battery-electric model was the TESLA MODEL Y with 655 registrations, ahead of the SKODA ENYAQ (378).
September 2024 was the 6th-highest of the 14 months on this page, which average 86 952 registrations a month; the peak was March 2024 with 98 014 and the low December 2023 with 73 057.
