Austria registered 96 450 passenger cars in May 2025: 24 311 new cars (25.2% of the total) and 72 139 used cars. That is down 4.2% on April 2025 and up 7.9% on May 2024. Year to date the market stands at 467 414 registrations, up 4.1% on the same period of last year.
VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 17 146 registrations and a 17.8% share, ahead of BMW (9 027) and AUDI (8 097). Together the top three brands took 35.5% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, OPEL grew fastest year on year (+22.3%) while VOLKSWAGEN fell furthest (−1.0%). The best-selling new-car model was the SKODA OCTAVIA with 666 new registrations, followed by the VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (566) and the BMW X1 (563).
Battery-electric cars took 8.3% of all registrations, compared with 6.4% in May 2024. Among new cars alone the electric share was 22.3%. Plug-in hybrids took 4.8%, other hybrids 13.2%, diesel 38.4% and petrol 35.2%. The leading electric brand was VOLKSWAGEN with 675 battery-electric registrations, ahead of TESLA (643). The best-selling battery-electric model was the TESLA MODEL Y with 546 registrations, ahead of the SKODA ELROQ (339).
May 2025 was the 6th-highest of the 22 months on this page, which average 88 519 registrations a month; the peak was April 2025 with 100 654 and the low December 2023 with 73 057.
