Passenger-car registrations in Austria

Austria registered 83 673 passenger cars in August 2025: 21 452 new cars (25.6% of the total) and 62 221 used cars. That is down 14.0% on July 2025 and up 1.7% on August 2024. Year to date the market stands at 752 314 registrations, up 3.9% on the same period of last year.
VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 14 594 registrations and a 17.4% share, ahead of BMW (7 286) and AUDI (6 966). Together the top three brands took 34.5% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, MERCEDES-BENZ grew fastest year on year (+7.3%) while VOLKSWAGEN fell furthest (−5.8%). The best-selling new-car model was the SKODA OCTAVIA with 494 new registrations, followed by the VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (470) and the DACIA BIGSTER (437).
Battery-electric cars took 8.5% of all registrations, compared with 6.7% in August 2024. Among new cars alone the electric share was 20.1%. Plug-in hybrids took 5.6%, other hybrids 14.0%, diesel 36.8% and petrol 35.1%. The leading electric brand was BYD with 566 battery-electric registrations, ahead of SKODA (566). The best-selling battery-electric model was the SKODA ELROQ with 284 registrations, ahead of the SKODA ENYAQ (282).
August 2025 was the 18th-highest of the 25 months on this page, which average 89 293 registrations a month; the peak was June 2025 with 103 887 and the low December 2023 with 73 057.
