Austria registered 82 221 passenger cars in December 2025: 22 376 new cars (27.2% of the total) and 59 845 used cars. That is down 2.0% on November 2025 and up 1.0% on December 2024. Year to date the market stands at 1 110 455 registrations, up 3.4% on the same period of last year.
VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 14 121 registrations and a 17.2% share, ahead of BMW (7 050) and AUDI (6 471). Together the top three brands took 33.6% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, VOLKSWAGEN grew fastest year on year (+3.8%) while HYUNDAI fell furthest (−18.3%). The best-selling new-car model was the HYUNDAI TUCSON with 590 new registrations, followed by the MITSUBISHI COLT (488) and the SKODA OCTAVIA (488).
Battery-electric cars took 9.2% of all registrations, compared with 8.3% in December 2024. Among new cars alone the electric share was 20.7%. Plug-in hybrids took 6.1%, other hybrids 15.2%, diesel 37.5% and petrol 31.9%. The leading electric brand was TESLA with 723 battery-electric registrations, ahead of SKODA (429). The best-selling battery-electric model was the TESLA MODEL Y with 480 registrations, ahead of the TESLA MODEL 3 (236).
December 2025 was the 24th-highest of the 29 months on this page, which average 89 326 registrations a month; the peak was June 2025 with 103 887 and the low December 2023 with 73 057.
