Austria registered 89 436 passenger cars in May 2026: 25 529 new cars (28.5% of the total) and 63 907 used cars. That is down 12.9% on April 2026 and down 7.3% on May 2025. Year to date the market stands at 466 356 registrations, down 0.2% on the same period of last year.
VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 15 846 registrations and a 17.7% share, ahead of BMW (7 829) and AUDI (7 516). Together the top three brands took 34.9% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, FORD fell furthest year on year (−15.1%). The best-selling new-car model was the VOLKSWAGEN GOLF with 724 new registrations, followed by the SKODA OCTAVIA (611) and the BMW X3 (468).
Battery-electric cars took 12.0% of all registrations, compared with 8.3% in May 2025. Among new cars alone the electric share was 25.8%. Plug-in hybrids took 6.1%, other hybrids 14.8%, diesel 33.8% and petrol 33.2%. The leading electric brand was SKODA with 752 battery-electric registrations, ahead of BMW (736). The best-selling battery-electric model was the SKODA ENYAQ with 392 registrations, ahead of the SKODA ELROQ (360).
May 2026 was the 15th-highest of the 34 months on this page, which average 89 907 registrations a month; the peak was March 2026 with 109 252 and the low December 2023 with 73 057.
