Methodology

Sources

The monthly figures on these pages come from Statistics Denmark (Danmarks Statistik), StatBank tables BIL53 (new registrations of passenger cars by fuel and by household or business, since 2018) and BIL55 (households' purchases and private leasing, businesses' purchases and business leasing), published around the ninth day after each month from the Danish Motor Register.

Brand and model tables come from Mobility Denmark, the importers' association, whose site publishes registrations by make and by model for five windows only: the two most recent months (each next to the same month a year earlier), the year to date and the two previous years, with no archive. auto-stats.eu therefore captures those tables on every refresh, keeps every capture, and shows brands and models for the months it has captured: 4 so far, from July 2025 to August 2026. Two more months are added every month (the newest month and the same month a year earlier), so the make-level history fills in over time. The association's monthly totals agree with Statistics Denmark within about 1 % (it counts slightly fewer cars); the pipeline requires 1.5 %.

Files read: 2026-09-13. Latest month: 2026-08, the newest month in Statistics Denmark's tables. The site shows the latest 36 months.

What is counted

Fuel groups

From BIL53: petrol (Benzin), diesel, plug-in hybrid (Pluginhybrid), battery electric (El), gas (LPG, natural gas) and other (petroleum, hydrogen, methanol, ethanol, other). Hybrids without a plug are not a category in Statistics Denmark's registration tables; they count as petrol or diesel cars, so no hybrid share is shown. All shares are of new registrations.

KPI definitions

Registrations
New passenger cars registered in Denmark in the month, from Statistics Denmark's StatBank table BIL53 (the Danish Motor Register). New cars only.
Year to date
New registrations from January to this month, and the change versus the same months a year earlier.
BEV share
Battery-electric cars (El) as a share of new registrations; plug-in hybrids (Pluginhybrid) are shown separately. Hybrids without a plug are not a category at Statistics Denmark.
Households
Share of the month's new cars registered to private persons (households), bought or privately leased; the rest go to businesses. From BIL53.
Leasing share
Leased cars, private and business, as a share of the month's new registrations. From BIL55.
MoM / YoY / YTD
Change versus the previous month, versus the same month a year earlier, and the calendar-year-to-date total (with its change versus the same period a year earlier).

Checks

At ingest: Statistics Denmark's fuel rows and its household and business rows must each sum to the month's total, and BIL55's total must equal BIL53's; every captured Mobility Denmark table must have its brand rows equal to its model rows per brand, and its total within 1.5 % of Statistics Denmark's where that month is published. A month with fewer than 6,000 registrations is rejected. A captured month whose association total moved by more than half a percent since the previous capture is reported; more than ten percent fails the run. An acceptance gate reviews the top 40 brands for coverage and for sibling spellings that should be one brand. A sanity gate rejects an export whose latest month is less than half the previous month, whose month series has a gap, or where the KPI or fuel mart is empty. An identity gate compares the exported totals of every published month against the raw tables, and the fuel groups against the total. Finally, a consistency audit re-derives shares, sums, MoM, YoY and rankings from the exported JSON, checks that uncaptured months carry no tables, and fails on any mismatch.
