Methodology

Sources

Traficom (Liikenne- ja viestintävirasto, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency) publishes registration statistics as PxWeb tables on its first-registration statistics page. Four tables are used:

Tables extracted: 2026-09-06. Latest complete month: 2026-08. The site shows the latest 36 months. Traficom publishes a month only once it is complete, so nothing on these pages is provisional and there is no register snapshot behind any figure: every number here is Traficom's own.

What is counted

Fuel groups

Petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, gas (LPG / CNG) and other, mapped from Traficom's fuel codes on both the new-car and the used-import tables. Traficom records full hybrids without a plug under petrol or diesel, so they cannot be shown separately.

Age at import

Age at import = registration year minus the year of first use as published by Traficom (years before 1986 are grouped in bands and count as the band's last year). Origin is the country the car was imported from. Brackets: under 3, 3–5, 6–10 and over 10 years.

Origin

The origin is the country the car was imported from, not necessarily where it was built. Traficom publishes individual countries alongside its own aggregates — "other EU country", "other EEA country" and "other countries" — and those are shown exactly as published, without redistributing them over countries.

CO₂

The average CO₂ tile and chart are Traficom's own published WLTP average for the month's newly registered passenger cars. Nothing is recomputed here, and used imports have no published CO₂.

KPI definitions

Registrations
New cars first registered in Finland plus used cars imported and registered in the month, from Traficom's statistics. Motorhomes are included in the totals but have no make or model rows.
New cars / New share
Ensirekisteröinti: new passenger cars registered for the first time, mainland Finland. New share = new cars ÷ all registrations.
Used imports / Avg import age (yrs)
Käytettynä maahantuotu: used cars imported individually and registered in Finland. Average import age = registration year minus the year the car was first taken into use.
BEV share
Battery-electric share of new cars plus used imports. PHEV = plug-in hybrids; Traficom records full hybrids under petrol or diesel.
New-car BEV share
Battery-electric cars as a share of new registrations only.
Avg CO₂, new (g/km)
Traficom's own published average WLTP CO₂ of the month's newly registered passenger cars; nothing is recomputed here and used imports have no published CO₂.
MoM / YoY / YTD
Change versus the previous month, versus the same month a year earlier, and the calendar-year-to-date total (with its change versus the same period a year earlier).

Checks

At ingest, every derived table must reproduce Traficom's own totals exactly: the summed model rows must equal the published new-car total row, and the summed used-import rows must equal the published used total, per month. An acceptance gate reviews the top 40 makes and models for coverage, sibling makes that should be one brand, and single-letter or otherwise suspect model names. A sanity gate rejects an export whose latest month is less than half the previous month, whose month series has a gap, or where any mart is empty for the latest month. An identity gate compares the exported new, used and total counts against the raw Traficom totals. A fuel gate fails when more than 2 % of a month's registrations carry a fuel code that is not mapped to a group. Finally, a consistency audit re-derives shares, MoM, YoY and rankings from the exported JSON and fails on any mismatch.

Data files

Every page is generated from JSON under /data/fi/: meta.json, months.json, YYYY-MM.json (with kpis, models[], makes[], import_origin[], import_age[], import_make[], bev_models[], bev_makes[]), makes.json, makes/<slug>.json. Free to reuse with attribution to Traficom and auto-stats.eu (CC BY 4.0).
