Sources

The figures on these pages come from the monthly registration statistics of the Romanian Ministry of Interior's licensing directorate, DGPCI / DRPCIV (Direcția Generală Permise de Conducere și Înmatriculări), published as news items on dgpci.mai.gov.ro: one archive per month ("Înmatriculări august 2026"), ZIP until February 2026 and RAR from March 2026, holding one workbook per vehicle class. The passenger-car workbook (Autoturisme, M1 and M1G) carries one row per vehicle first registered in the month: county, make, type-approval codes, commercial description, body, engine, fuel, owner type, the first registration date abroad and the Romanian one. The same archive holds the ministry's own summaries (its ACEA table and a make-level table), which the pipeline reads as a gate.

Files read: 2026-09-13. Latest complete month: 2026-08. The site shows the latest 36 months. A month's file is posted once, in the first days of the following month, and is final: there is no register snapshot behind any figure and no survivorship correction.

What is counted

• New (înscriere vehicul nou): a new passenger car's first registration in Romania. Used import (înscriere vehicul uzat): the first Romanian registration of a car registered abroad before. The total is new plus used; both are the ministry's own classification of each row.
• Re-registrations of cars already in Romania (a change of owner or plate) are not in the file; the ministry counts them only in its summary table.
• Models are the ministry's commercial descriptions ("TOYOTA COROLLA", "GLC 220 D 4MATIC", "MG4 EV URBAN"), normalised: the make prefix is stripped, trim and drivetrain suffixes fold into the model, Mercedes-Benz is grouped by class and BMW by series. A description that cannot be resolved counts in the brand and in no model row, so a brand's total can exceed the sum of its listed models.

Fuel groups

From the ministry's Combustibil field: petrol (BENZINA, with E85), diesel (MOTORINA, with B100), battery electric (ELECTRIC), gas (BENZINA+GPL, BENZINA+GNC, GNC, GPL and the rare LNG codes), hybrid for every HIBRID code (full, mild and plug-in hybrids together), and other. The main hybrid code (HIBRID 01, about half of new cars) holds full hybrids and plug-in hybrids alike — a Toyota Corolla and a BYD Seal U DM-i carry the same code — and HIBRID 02 holds diesel mild hybrids and diesel plug-ins, so plug-in hybrids cannot be separated and no PHEV figure is shown for Romania. The BEV share counts new cars and used imports together.

Owners and age at import

Share of the month's new cars registered to a private person ('persoana fizica') rather than a company (leasing, rental, dealers, fleets). Age at import = Romanian registration minus the first registration abroad, both to the month, in brackets under 3, 3–5, 6–10 and over 10 years; a used import with no earlier first registration carries no age. No CO₂ and no country of origin are published.

Registrations

Passenger cars (M1, M1G) first registered in Romania in the month: new cars plus used cars imported and registered for the first time, one row per vehicle in the Ministry of Interior's (DGPCI) monthly file.

New cars / New share

'Înscriere vehicul nou': a new car's first registration in Romania. New share = new cars ÷ all first registrations.

Used imports / Avg import age (yrs)

'Înscriere vehicul uzat': a used car's first Romanian registration (a car registered abroad before). Average import age = Romanian registration minus the first registration abroad, from the two dates in the file.

BEV share

Battery-electric cars as a share of all first registrations, new and used together. The ministry's fuel codes do not separate plug-in hybrids from other hybrids, so plug-ins are inside the hybrid group and no PHEV figure is shown.

New-car BEV share

Battery-electric cars as a share of new registrations only.

Private holders

Share of the month's new cars registered to a private person ('persoana fizica') rather than a company (leasing, rental, dealers, fleets).

MoM / YoY / YTD

Change versus the previous month, versus the same month a year earlier, and the calendar-year-to-date total (with its change versus the same period a year earlier).

Checks

At ingest every file must pass its gates: the header row equals the published layout, at least 15,000 vehicles, every row's Romanian registration month equals the file's month, every row is new or used and M1 or M1G, the ministry's ACEA summary equals the file's new-car count and its make-level summary equals the per-make new counts, each within half a percent (the ministry's own tables can differ from its detail sheet by a few cars, as in January 2023). An acceptance gate reviews the top 40 makes and models for coverage, sibling makes that should be one brand, and single-letter or otherwise suspect model names. A sanity gate rejects an export whose latest month is less than half the previous month, whose month series has a gap, or where any mart is empty. An identity gate compares the exported new, used and total counts of every published month against the raw table, and the fuel groups against the total. A fuel gate fails when more than 2 % of a month's registrations carry an unmapped fuel value and lists any unmapped value in the log. Finally, a consistency audit re-derives shares, sums, MoM, YoY and rankings from the exported JSON and fails on any mismatch.

Caveats

• Counts are the ministry's own monthly files: one row per passenger car first registered in Romania, new or used. Re-registrations of cars already in Romania are not in the file. Models are the ministry's commercial descriptions, normalised; plug-in hybrids cannot be separated from other hybrids.
• Percentages are shown only when the comparison month has at least 30 registrations.
• Brands with fewer than 50 registrations over the 36 months have no brand page and appear as plain text in the tables.
• Registration is not sale: dealer demo stock and leasing fleets register too (about 70 % of new cars are registered to companies).

Data files

Every page is generated from JSON under /data/ro/: meta.json, months.json, YYYY-MM.json (with kpis, models[], makes[], import_make[], import_model[], import_age[], bev_models[], bev_makes[]), makes.json, makes/<slug>.json.
