Sources

The figures on these pages come from Mobility Sweden, the association of the vehicle manufacturers and importers, which publishes a monthly report of new registrations on the first working day after each month at mobilitysweden.se: a workbook with passenger cars by make and model, by fuel, the battery-electric ranking by model and the split between private persons and companies. The reports of 2023 and early 2024 use an older layout; both are read.

Every month is checked against Trafikanalys, the government agency for transport statistics, whose monthly workbook of new registrations (source: the Swedish Transport Agency's road traffic register) counts passenger cars in total and by fuel. Trafikanalys includes cars imported directly by their owners, which the association's report does not, so the report runs 1–5 % below it; the pipeline requires the report to be at most 7 % below and 0.5 % above, its battery-electric and plug-in counts within 1 % of the month, petrol and hybrid together within 3.5 % (the two classify mild hybrids differently; each alone can differ by several percent) and diesel within 3 %.

Files read: 2026-09-13. Latest month: 2026-08, the newest month present in both sources. The site shows the latest 36 months. The whole history is re-read on every refresh (December is republished as a final version early in the following year); moves are listed in the refresh.

What is counted

• New passenger cars registered in Sweden in the month, as Mobility Sweden counts them (its "Totalmarknad"). New cars only: used imports are not part of these pages, so shares here are shares of new registrations, as on the German and Swiss pages.
• Models are the association's own groupings ("EX/XC40", "S/V60", "ID.7/ID.7 TOURER"), upper-cased with the make prefix removed. A grouping the association has named two ways over the window ("XC40" and "EX/XC40", "S/V90" and "S/V90N", "ID.7" and "ID.7/ID.7 TOURER") is shown under its newer name throughout, so each model is one series; a make's "Övriga", "Ospecificerad" or its own name as a model is its OTHER rest. Every brand equals the sum of its model rows.
• Brands are the association's makes with a few spellings unified (VW → Volkswagen, Mercedes → Mercedes-Benz, Lynk → Lynk & Co); "Övriga" is the OTHER row. Motorhome converters stay separate brands.
• BEV per model and brand come from the report's electric ranking. From March 2024 its labels are the model table's, so the ranking fills the models' BEV column and equals the fuel sheet's battery-electric count; in the older layout the ranking is a separate list with its own labels ("XC40 PURE ELECTRIC", "I4 M50"), folded to the model table's names where the model is the same; the models' BEV column is empty in those months and the list can fall a few percent short of the fuel count.
• Private share is the share of the month's new cars registered to physical persons rather than legal persons (companies, leasing, dealers), from the report's owner split; per brand likewise.

Fuel groups

From the report's fuel sheet: petrol (Bensin), diesel, hybrid (Elhybrid: hybrids without a plug, full and mild), plug-in hybrid (Laddhybrid), battery electric (El), gas and other (Etanol, unspecified). All shares are of new registrations.

Registrations

New passenger cars registered in Sweden in the month as Mobility Sweden counts them (its monthly report, without cars imported directly by their owners), checked against Trafikanalys's official monthly series. New cars only.

Year to date

New registrations from January to this month, and the change versus the same months a year earlier.

BEV share

Battery-electric cars (El) as a share of new registrations, from the report's fuel sheet; plug-in hybrids (Laddhybrid) are shown separately.

Hybrid share

Hybrids without a plug (Elhybrid: full and mild) as a share of new registrations.

Private holders

Share of the month's new cars registered to physical persons rather than legal persons (companies, leasing, dealers), from the report's owner split.

MoM / YoY / YTD

Change versus the previous month, versus the same month a year earlier, and the calendar-year-to-date total (with its change versus the same period a year earlier).

Checks

At ingest, per month: the report's model rows must sum to its total, its make rows must match their model rows within ten cars, its fuel sheet and its owner split must equal the total, and its electric ranking must not exceed the fuel sheet's battery-electric count (and must equal it from March 2024); the total must be between 7 % below and 0.5 % above Trafikanalys, and the fuel groups within the tolerances above. A month with fewer than 10,000 registrations is rejected as a truncated workbook. A month whose total moved by more than half a percent since the previous run is reported; more than ten percent fails the run. An acceptance gate reviews the top 40 brands for coverage and for sibling spellings that should be one brand. A sanity gate rejects an export whose latest month is less than half the previous month, whose month series has a gap, or where any mart is empty. An identity gate compares the exported totals of every published month against the raw tables, and the fuel groups against the total. Finally, a consistency audit re-derives shares, sums, MoM, YoY and rankings from the exported JSON and fails on any mismatch.

Caveats

• Counts are Mobility Sweden's monthly report of new passenger cars: the model rows as the association groups them, summing to its total; the fuel sheet gives the fuel mix and the electric ranking the BEV columns. Cars imported directly by their owners are not in the report (Trafikanalys counts them: 1–5 % of the market).
• Percentages are shown only when the comparison month has at least 30 registrations.
• Brands with fewer than 50 registrations over the 36 months have no brand page and appear as plain text in the tables.
• Registration is not sale: dealer demo stock and leasing fleets register too (more than half of new cars go to legal persons).
• Mobility Sweden states no licence for its statistics; they are the association's public monthly figures, reproduced here with attribution.
