Motorcycle registrations by country

New motorcycles and motorcycles in use in Lithuania, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Ireland, Czechia, Romania, Luxembourg, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, France, Italy, Portugal, Greece and Slovenia, annual figures to 2025

The rest of this site is about passenger cars. This page is the first on motorcycles: how many new ones each country registers in a year, how that changed on the year before, how many are in use, and how both compare with the population and with the number of cars. The figures are annual and come from one source for every country, the EU transport statistics, which collect them from the national registers. One source does not mean one definition: what a country calls a motorcycle differs, as the section on limits below sets out, so differences of less than about a tenth between two countries should not be read as real.

New motorcycles

First registrations of new motorcycles in the latest year, the change on the year before, and the same count per 100,000 inhabitants. The zero-emission share is of new motorcycles, and new mopeds are a separate column, not part of the motorcycle count. The last column repeats the source's own marks on a figure.

The share over 125 cmยณ separates the larger machines from scooters and light motorcycles, where the country reports engine size.

What stands out

Italy registered the most new motorcycles in 2025, 331 745, ahead of Spain (245 806) and France (210 683). The 22 markets with a figure for both years registered 1 313 146 new motorcycles between them, โˆ’10.5% on 2024. For the size of the population the order is a different one: Greece registered 770 new motorcycles per 100,000 inhabitants, Italy 563, and Finland, at the other end, 48.

Registrations grew fastest in Romania (+23.5%) and fell most in Germany (โˆ’35.6%). They fell in 14 of the 22 markets, by more than a tenth in Germany (โˆ’35.6%), Austria (โˆ’30.5%), Sweden (โˆ’24.9%), France (โˆ’17.0%), Finland (โˆ’16.4%), Belgium (โˆ’16.1%) and Czechia (โˆ’12.5%). For Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Czechia, Italy, Slovenia, Portugal and the Netherlands the year before, 2024, had been the highest year since 2013, so the fall is measured from a peak.

The fall of 2025 has a background that the industry itself names. Commenting on the year's figures, the secretary general of the association of the motorcycle industry in Europe called them the anticipated correction after the transition to the Euro 5+ emissions standard, and said that 2024 had been "significantly driven by stock registrations ahead of the new emissions standard" (the association's statement of 27 January 2026). A motorcycle registered by a dealer in 2024 and sold to a rider in 2025 counts in 2024 in these figures, so part of the difference between the two years is a matter of dates, not of demand. The figures on this page cannot separate the two.

Greece has the most motorcycles in use for its population, 185 per 1,000 inhabitants, and Ireland the fewest, 9. Set against passenger cars, Greece has 31.1 motorcycles for every 100 cars and Ireland 1.9. Machines over 125 cmยณ are 93.7% of the motorcycles in use in Estonia and 49.6% in Czechia, where machines of 125 cmยณ or less are the larger part.

Zero-emission machines remain a small part of new motorcycles: the share is highest in Romania, 11.9%, and lowest in Portugal, 1.0%, and 3.2% in Spain, the market in the middle of the 16 that report it. New mopeds outnumber new motorcycles in Denmark, the Netherlands and Belgium; in every other market that reports both, the motorcycle is the larger of the two columns.
