Registrations by federal state
Germany · August 2026
Nordrhein-Westfalen registered the most new cars of any federal state in August 2026 with 46 244 (21.8% of the national total), followed by Bayern (18.8%) and Baden-Württemberg (13.7%). The three together account for 54.3% of German registrations. Among the ten largest federal states, Schleswig-Holstein grew fastest year on year (+27.4%) while Berlin fell furthest (−10.3%).
The battery-electric share was highest in Schleswig-Holstein (39.2%) and lowest in Hamburg (21.6%). State figures follow the holder's address, so states with large leasing, rental and manufacturer fleets show high totals and, often, high electric shares that do not reflect where the cars are driven.
