Sweden registered 25 675 new passenger cars in May 2025. That is up 5.7% on April 2025 and up 2.3% on May 2024. Year to date the market stands at 113 411 registrations, up 6.1% on the same period of last year. Private buyers accounted for 33.5% of registrations, the rest going to companies, leasing and fleets.

VOLVO led the brand ranking with 5 002 registrations and a 19.5% share, ahead of VOLKSWAGEN (3 386) and TOYOTA (2 076). Together the top three brands took 40.8% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, AUDI grew fastest year on year (+59.2%) while TOYOTA fell furthest (โˆ’16.6%). The best-selling model was the VOLVO XC60 with 1 580 registrations, followed by the VOLVO EX/XC40 (1 218) and the VOLKSWAGEN ID.7/ID.7 TOURER (875).

Battery-electric cars took 36.9% of new registrations, compared with 30.3% in May 2024. Plug-in hybrids took 26.4%, other hybrids 10.5%, diesel 6.0% and petrol 20.2%. The leading electric brand was VOLVO with 1 995 battery-electric registrations, ahead of VOLKSWAGEN (1 534). The best-selling battery-electric model was the VOLVO EX/XC40 with 900 registrations, ahead of the VOLKSWAGEN ID.7/ID.7 TOURER (875).

May 2025 was the 5th-highest of the 21 months on this page, which average 23 380 registrations a month; the peak was December 2023 with 29 436 and the low July 2024 with 16 337.
