Sweden registered 20 168 new passenger cars in August 2025. That is up 14.0% on July 2025 and up 5.9% on August 2024. Year to date the market stands at 178 828 registrations, up 6.7% on the same period of last year. Private buyers accounted for 39.9% of registrations, the rest going to companies, leasing and fleets.

VOLVO led the brand ranking with 2 718 registrations and a 13.5% share, ahead of VOLKSWAGEN (2 614) and TOYOTA (2 245). Together the top three brands took 37.6% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, BMW grew fastest year on year (+42.7%). The best-selling model was the VOLVO XC60 with 858 registrations, followed by the VOLVO EX/XC40 (587) and the TOYOTA RAV 4 (546).

Battery-electric cars took 33.6% of new registrations, compared with 35.7% in August 2024. Plug-in hybrids took 25.5%, other hybrids 14.2%, diesel 6.8% and petrol 20.0%. The leading electric brand was VOLVO with 1 186 battery-electric registrations, ahead of VOLKSWAGEN (985). The best-selling battery-electric model was the VOLVO EX/XC40 with 492 registrations, ahead of the VOLKSWAGEN ID.7/ID.7 TOURER (441).

August 2025 was the 17th-highest of the 24 months on this page, which average 23 183 registrations a month; the peak was December 2023 with 29 436 and the low July 2024 with 16 337.
