Sweden registered 16 041 new passenger cars in January 2026. That is down 32.8% on December 2025 and down 18.3% on January 2025. Year to date, meaning January alone, the total is 16 041, down 18.3% on January last year. Private buyers accounted for 40.2% of registrations, the rest going to companies, leasing and fleets.

VOLVO led the brand ranking with 2 291 registrations and a 14.3% share, ahead of VOLKSWAGEN (1 844) and TOYOTA (1 611). Together the top three brands took 35.8% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, MERCEDES-BENZ grew fastest year on year (+46.5%) while VOLKSWAGEN fell furthest (−35.2%). The best-selling model was the VOLVO EX/XC40 with 826 registrations, followed by the VOLVO XC60 (638) and the TESLA MODEL Y (499).

Battery-electric cars took 41.8% of new registrations, compared with 28.8% in January 2025. Plug-in hybrids took 22.3%, other hybrids 13.3%, diesel 5.1% and petrol 16.8%. The leading electric brand was VOLVO with 1 373 battery-electric registrations, ahead of KIA (912). The best-selling battery-electric model was the VOLVO EX/XC40 with 774 registrations, ahead of the TESLA MODEL Y (499).

January 2026 was the weakest of the 29 months on this page, which average 22 987 registrations a month; the strongest was December 2023 with 29 436.
