Sweden registered 25 985 new passenger cars in May 2026. That is up 7.6% on April 2026 and up 1.2% on May 2025. Year to date the market stands at 112 092 registrations, down 1.2% on the same period of last year. Private buyers accounted for 36.2% of registrations, the rest going to companies, leasing and fleets.

VOLVO led the brand ranking with 5 150 registrations and a 19.8% share, ahead of VOLKSWAGEN (3 099) and KIA (2 214). Together the top three brands took 40.3% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, TESLA grew fastest year on year (+70.6%) while AUDI fell furthest (โˆ’47.5%). The best-selling model was the VOLVO EX/XC40 with 1 634 registrations, followed by the VOLVO XC60 (1 565) and the TESLA MODEL Y (672).

Battery-electric cars took 41.2% of new registrations, compared with 36.9% in May 2025. Plug-in hybrids took 25.6%, other hybrids 7.7%, diesel 6.5% and petrol 18.7%. The leading electric brand was VOLVO with 2 228 battery-electric registrations, ahead of KIA (1 505). The best-selling battery-electric model was the VOLVO EX/XC40 with 1 220 registrations, ahead of the TESLA MODEL Y (672).

May 2026 was the 6th-highest of the 33 months on this page, which average 23 111 registrations a month; the peak was December 2023 with 29 436 and the low January 2026 with 16 041.
