Ireland registered 4 875 passenger cars in December 2023: 1 064 new cars (21.8% of the total) and 3 811 used imports. That is down 30.0% on November 2023 and up 29.9% on December 2022. Year to date the market stands at 167 805 registrations, up 13.4% on the same period of last year.

VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 982 registrations and a 20.1% share, ahead of BMW (479) and AUDI (425). Together the top three brands took 38.7% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, MERCEDES-BENZ grew fastest year on year (+94.8%) while NISSAN fell furthest (โˆ’23.2%). The best-selling model was the TESLA MODEL Y with 109 registrations, followed by the VOLKSWAGEN T-ROC (97) and the FORD KUGA (70).

Battery-electric cars took 7.9% of all registrations. Among new cars alone the electric share was 22.9%. Plug-in hybrids took 11.2%, other hybrids 13.3%, diesel 24.3% and petrol 43.3%.

December 2023 was the weakest of the 4 months on this page, which average 7 962 registrations a month; the strongest was September 2023 with 11 114.
