Ireland registered 15 647 passenger cars in May 2024: 10 055 new cars (64.3% of the total) and 5 592 used imports. That is down 12.1% on April 2024 and up 5.9% on May 2023. Year to date the market stands at 98 085 registrations, up 11.6% on the same period of last year.

VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 3 037 registrations and a 19.4% share, ahead of TOYOTA (1 598) and BMW (1 104). Together the top three brands took 36.7% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, BMW grew fastest year on year (+35.0%) while KIA fell furthest (โˆ’24.6%). The best-selling model was the TOYOTA COROLLA with 367 registrations, followed by the SKODA OCTAVIA (360) and the VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN (337).

Battery-electric cars took 8.8% of all registrations. Among new cars alone the electric share was 12.3%. Plug-in hybrids took 11.2%, other hybrids 14.1%, diesel 23.4% and petrol 42.4%. The leading electric brand was VOLKSWAGEN with 308 battery-electric registrations, ahead of TESLA (186). The best-selling battery-electric model was the VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 with 256 registrations, ahead of the TESLA MODEL Y (172).

May 2024 was the 5th-highest of the 9 months on this page, which average 14 437 registrations a month; the peak was January 2024 with 25 461 and the low December 2023 with 4 875.
