Ireland registered 31 259 passenger cars in January 2026: 24 231 new cars (77.5% of the total) and 7 028 used imports. That is up 392.6% on December 2025 and up 14.5% on January 2025. Year to date, meaning January alone, the total is 31 259, up 14.5% on January last year.

TOYOTA led the brand ranking with 4 511 registrations and a 14.4% share, ahead of VOLKSWAGEN (3 603) and HYUNDAI (3 130). Together the top three brands took 36.0% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, VOLKSWAGEN grew fastest year on year (+23.1%) while NISSAN fell furthest (โˆ’22.0%). The best-selling model was the HYUNDAI TUCSON with 1 160 registrations, followed by the TOYOTA YARIS CROSS (1 002) and the KIA SPORTAGE (874).

Battery-electric cars took 18.9% of all registrations, compared with 12.9% in January 2025. Among new cars alone the electric share was 22.4%. Plug-in hybrids took 15.5%, other hybrids 27.4%, diesel 14.2% and petrol 24.0%. The leading electric brand was HYUNDAI with 862 battery-electric registrations, ahead of VOLKSWAGEN (675). The best-selling battery-electric model was the VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 with 462 registrations, ahead of the HYUNDAI INSTER (281).

January 2026 was the strongest of the 29 months on this page, which average 14 966 registrations a month; the weakest was December 2024 with 4 750.
