Ireland registered 18 582 passenger cars in May 2026: 11 063 new cars (59.5% of the total) and 7 519 used imports. That is down 5.5% on April 2026 and up 27.7% on May 2025. Year to date the market stands at 113 902 registrations, up 13.2% on the same period of last year.

VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 3 189 registrations and a 17.2% share, ahead of TOYOTA (2 887) and SKODA (1 619). Together the top three brands took 41.4% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, SKODA grew fastest year on year (+103.1%) while FORD fell furthest (โˆ’19.4%). The best-selling model was the TOYOTA RAV4 with 843 registrations, followed by the SKODA KODIAQ (345) and the SKODA OCTAVIA (343).

Battery-electric cars took 22.2% of all registrations, compared with 11.4% in May 2025. Among new cars alone the electric share was 27.2%. Plug-in hybrids took 13.3%, other hybrids 20.7%, diesel 15.8% and petrol 28.1%. The leading electric brand was VOLKSWAGEN with 489 battery-electric registrations, ahead of SKODA (357). The best-selling battery-electric model was the VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 with 341 registrations, ahead of the SKODA ENYAQ (182).

May 2026 was the 13th-highest of the 33 months on this page, which average 15 657 registrations a month; the peak was January 2026 with 31 259 and the low December 2024 with 4 750.
