The Netherlands registered 49 311 passenger cars in September 2023: 29 391 new cars (59.6% of the total) and 19 920 used imports. That is up 6.3% on the previous month and up 14.1% on September 2022. Year to date the market stands at 464 912 registrations, up 16.6% on the same period of last year.

VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 5 946 registrations and a 12.1% share, ahead of TOYOTA (3 800) and KIA (3 196). Together the top three brands took 26.3% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, TOYOTA grew fastest year on year (+35.0%) while FORD fell furthest (โˆ’20.0%). The best-selling model was the TESLA MODEL Y with 1 810 registrations, followed by the VOLKSWAGEN POLO (1 438) and the VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (1 134).

Battery-electric cars took 23.7% of all registrations. Among new cars alone the electric share was 34.9%. Plug-in hybrids took 14.6%, other hybrids 21.1%, diesel 3.0% and petrol 37.5%. The leading electric brand was TESLA with 1 959 battery-electric registrations, ahead of PEUGEOT (1 036). The best-selling battery-electric model was the TESLA MODEL Y with 1 810 registrations, ahead of the KIA NIRO (626). New cars averaged 75.3 g/km of COโ‚‚ (WLTP). Used imports were on average 5.8 years old when they were registered.

Counts are cars first registered in the Netherlands in the month, measured on the RDW register snapshot taken a few days after the month ended and frozen there, so a month never changes once published. Cars exported later stay in the register for two years and only scrapped cars vanish: measured against CBS, a 36-month window loses at most 1.4 % (2025 100.6 %, 2024 99.6 %, 2023 98.6 %, 2022 97.6 % of the official new-car counts). Percentages are shown only when the comparison month has at least 30 registrations.
