The Netherlands registered 57 456 passenger cars in January 2025: 32 809 new cars (57.1% of the total) and 24 647 used imports. That is down 1.9% on December 2024 and up 2.4% on January 2024. Year to date, meaning January alone, the total is 57 456, up 2.4% on January last year.

VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 6 289 registrations and a 11.0% share, ahead of KIA (4 852) and BMW (3 813). Together the top three brands took 26.0% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, KIA grew fastest year on year (+74.2%) while TOYOTA fell furthest (โˆ’17.9%). The best-selling model was the KIA EV3 with 1 757 registrations, followed by the VOLKSWAGEN POLO (1 351) and the VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (1 073).

Battery-electric cars took 21.5% of all registrations, compared with 17.9% in January 2024. Among new cars alone the electric share was 34.7%. Plug-in hybrids took 21.5%, other hybrids 22.5%, diesel 2.4% and petrol 32.0%. The leading electric brand was KIA with 2 047 battery-electric registrations, ahead of VOLVO (1 227). The best-selling battery-electric model was the KIA EV3 with 1 757 registrations, ahead of the VOLVO EX30 (736). New cars averaged 71.7 g/km of COโ‚‚ (WLTP). Used imports were on average 5.7 years old when they were registered.

January 2025 was the 6th-highest of the 17 months on this page, which average 53 566 registrations a month; the peak was March 2024 with 61 125 and the low December 2023 with 45 733.

Counts are cars first registered in the Netherlands in the month, measured on the RDW register snapshot taken a few days after the month ended and frozen there, so a month never changes once published. Cars exported later stay in the register for two years and only scrapped cars vanish: measured against CBS, a 36-month window loses at most 1.4 % (2025 100.6 %, 2024 99.6 %, 2023 98.6 %, 2022 97.6 % of the official new-car counts). Percentages are shown only when the comparison month has at least 30 registrations.
