The Netherlands registered 63 996 passenger cars in March 2026: 31 200 new cars (48.8% of the total) and 32 796 used imports. That is up 17.6% on February 2026 and up 12.6% on March 2025. Year to date the market stands at 181 960 registrations, up 9.4% on the same period of last year.

VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 6 812 registrations and a 10.6% share, ahead of BMW (4 432) and TOYOTA (4 286). Together the top three brands took 24.3% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, VOLKSWAGEN grew fastest year on year (+22.4%) while FORD fell furthest (โˆ’6.7%). The best-selling model was the FORD KUGA with 1 094 registrations, followed by the TESLA MODEL Y (1 080) and the VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (1 051). The KUGA arrived mainly as a used import: 755 used against 339 new.

Battery-electric cars took 20.3% of all registrations, compared with 21.5% in March 2025. Among new cars alone the electric share was 35.7%. Plug-in hybrids took 28.4%, other hybrids 24.9%, diesel 2.6% and petrol 23.7%. The leading electric brand was TESLA with 2 072 battery-electric registrations, ahead of KIA (1 382). The best-selling battery-electric model was the TESLA MODEL Y with 1 080 registrations, ahead of the TESLA MODEL 3 (950). New cars averaged 63.0 g/km of COโ‚‚ (WLTP). Used imports were on average 5.4 years old when they were registered.

March 2026 was the 2nd-highest of the 31 months on this page, which average 55 853 registrations a month; the peak was December 2025 with 72 636 and the low December 2023 with 45 733.

Counts are cars first registered in the Netherlands in the month, measured on the RDW register snapshot taken a few days after the month ended and frozen there, so a month never changes once published. Cars exported later stay in the register for two years and only scrapped cars vanish: measured against CBS, a 36-month window loses at most 1.4 % (2025 100.6 %, 2024 99.6 %, 2023 98.6 %, 2022 97.6 % of the official new-car counts). Percentages are shown only when the comparison month has at least 30 registrations.
