New passenger-car registrations in Germany

Germany registered 249 163 new passenger cars in April 2026. That is down 15.3% on March 2026 and up 2.7% on April 2025. Year to date the market stands at 948 567 registrations, up 4.5% on the same period of last year. Private buyers accounted for 35.4% of registrations, rental and car-sharing fleets for 12.0% and dealers and manufacturers for 24.5%.

VW led the brand ranking with 46 101 registrations and a 18.5% share, ahead of MERCEDES (23 291) and BMW (22 435). Together the top three brands took 36.9% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, AUDI grew fastest year on year (+19.0%) while FORD fell furthest (−18.5%). The best-selling model was the VW GOLF with 7 341 registrations, followed by the VW T-ROC (5 179) and the VW TIGUAN (4 922).

Battery-electric cars took 25.8% of new registrations, compared with 18.8% in April 2025. Plug-in hybrids took 11.1%, other hybrids 28.2%, diesel 13.0% and petrol 21.4%. The leading electric brand was VW with 9 213 battery-electric registrations, ahead of SKODA (6 131). The best-selling battery-electric model was the VW ID.3 with 3 518 registrations, ahead of the SKODA ELROQ (3 341).

SUVs remained the largest segment with 35.1% of registrations, ahead of compact (13.6%). The electric share was highest among minis (49.9% BEV) and lowest among motorhomes (0.0%). April 2026 was the 9th-highest of the 32 months on this page, which average 236 079 registrations a month; the peak was June 2024 with 297 329 and the low January 2026 with 193 981.
