The United Kingdom recorded 463 535 first registrations of cars in Q4 2023, used imports included. That is down 10.0% on Q3 2023 and up 11.8% on Q4 2022. Year to date the market stands at 1 945 832 registrations, up 17.8% on the same period of last year.

VOLKSWAGEN led the brand ranking with 40 571 registrations and a 8.8% share, ahead of BMW (34 054) and AUDI (34 046). Together the top three brands took 23.4% of the market. Among the ten largest brands, MG grew fastest year on year (+56.2%) while NISSAN fell furthest (−15.5%). The best-selling model was the FORD PUMA with 12 293 registrations, followed by the MINI MINI (11 205) and the NISSAN QASHQAI (10 747).

Battery-electric cars took 16.4% of all registrations. Plug-in hybrids took 9.1%, other hybrids 25.3%, diesel 6.0% and petrol 43.0%. The leading electric brand was BMW with 9 897 battery-electric registrations, ahead of TESLA (9 857). The best-selling battery-electric model was the TESLA MODEL Y with 7 723 registrations, ahead of the AUDI Q4 (5 637).

Q4 2023 was the weakest of the 3 quarters on this page, which average 480 939 registrations a quarter; the strongest was Q3 2023 with 514 864.
